islamization of education

I’m still trying to put together a “dream team” of committed educationalists to help me lay the foundation of Islamized curriculum for Muslim International Schools.
If there are any concerned teachers viewing my blog, please reach out and lets try to get the ball rolling.

    Assalamu alaikum,
May Allah make this venture successful. I will see if anyone in Australia is willing to help inshallah.

  2. Najla says:

    Assalamu Alaykum,

There are a group of Muslim teachers who have set up the Muslim Teachers Association in Australia to address the educational needs of Muslim students by providing quality and relevant teaching material.

    Please check out the website:
    http://www.muslimteachers.com.au

This is a massive task and very necessary. An international response is a step is the right direction. May Allah aid us in this task.

I am a Maldivian and we had a lecture on the topic ”islamization of education” by Dr. Bilal Philips yesterday evenin in capital Male’.  It was very interesting but was very shord due to time restriction. I think Islamization of Maldivian educattion system is the best sulution for our social problems.

  6. Dr Muneer says:

    assalamualaikum.
I would like to bring your kind attention to our meetings in male during the event of “THE CALL” and the discussions regarding the need of joint venture of muslim educators throughout the world
to develop the very fundumentals necessary such as developing our own study meterials, books, and training institutions and implementation of teaching methodology in islamic perspective. As you know, with a vision of imparting islamized education we are presently giving preschool education and insha allah hope to start primary level education very soon.I am working on how to get the meterials and train the teachers in a way to adapt to the new system of teaching in an islamic perspective.I shall be happy to work with you sir in the project in the frontline.baarakallah.assalaamu alaikum.

  7. Dr Muneer says:

    assalaamu alaikum
As India is a secular democracy we have to find out some new ways to implement the system as there is a possibility of failure if we directly term it as “Islamization of education”.So we rather would prefer a term such as “educate the children in an islamic environment”as we have to live among non muslims in our country in hormony, which i personally  find shall be more acceptable.

  8. Dr Bilal says:

    wa alaykum salaam,
Each region or country will have to adapt the terminology to suit their political climate. As long as we are clear on the goals, methods and foundational principles, it doesn’t matter what we call it. Call it “Education of Muslim Children” or whatever.

  9. Dr Bilal says:

wa alaykum salaam Brother Dr Muneer,
If you are prepared to step up to the front lines, as you stated, please send me an email with your details, and we can start setting up the website forum for teachers internationally, and to set up fb account, blog, twitter, etc. I would then redirect all the mail coming in from those interested in the project to you to start organizing the effort.
    wa salaam

Please email me at aabphilips@gmail.com for me to forward your interest to our co-ordinator, in shaa Allaah. Please send a copy of your CV along with your email, in shaa allaah.

  12. Dr Bilal says:

    wa alaykum salaam Sister Najla,
Great effort, and I pray Allah gives it success and that what I’m working on or promoting can somehow be included or added to that effort. At any rate, cooperation in these matters is a must. Please inform them about the islamic online university, if they don’t already know. I will be following up with them, in shaa Allaah.

  13. Muhammad Ahasan says:

    Assalamu alaikum
Alhamdulillah. Your lecture on this topic opened my eyes. I can realise how important it is to establish “Islamization of education” even in Muslim countries. I’ve been living in UK for 5 yrs completed my masters but I’m now going back home Bangladesh and Insaallah I want to start an Islamic School in my city. Last year when I visited my country I didn’t any school for my newphew to get enrol there. As you said traditional madrasas have no mercy and other so called islamic schools are established to earn profit not for sake of Allah. But problem is I’m not trained in this area like childern phycology or child education. Can you please provide informaiton regarding this issues such as: How to be a Muslim educator/teachers and all other info. I think the lecture was ended due to time restriction. But I need a complete instruction to establish an Islamic School. Please guide me and if we dont start now it would be too late for our early generaltion who are competing to enrol in English medium school.

  14. Dr Bilal says:

    wa alaykum salaam,
    Contact muslimteachers.com.au for information.

  15. Dr Muneer says:

  16. Dr Bilal says:

wa alaykum salaam Dr Muneer. I am still trying to find someone to head this effort. Who would then follow up and coordinate the website for the project.

  17. Dr Muneer says:

assalaamualaikum, did you get my CV sir? I am prepared to sit in the frontline for this effor,.and inshaallah i can take the responsibility if you could find me suitable for the project.

  18. Dr Bilal says:

wa alaykum salaam. I got your cv brother. If you could set up a website along the lines of http://www.lessonplanspage.com and or http://www.curriki.org and prepare the forum for teachers, that would be a great start. In the meantime, set up a group on yahoo or anyother system, for me to start to send all those who have expressed interest to begin to gather, share their skills and begin communicating.

  19. Irfan says:

You are creating a personality cult around you, aren’t you? Islamization of education is highly likely to be a failure. Stop controlling minds of other human beings for goodness sake. how about advocating liberalism, secularism, science & reason instead?

  20. Irfan says:

What the hell? How could you say it is fundamentally “haraam” to put “our” children in “non-Muslim schools”?!  It’s not just a matter of excuse or monetary gains for somebody to go to so-and-so school and these reasons may not always apply. Necessity, pursuit of happiness and various other reasons are also at play you moron. And by the way, you sound so amateur and not scholarly at all. Haah. Product of Islamic school talking bullshit. Hey, check this out (Warning: you might find its contents disappointing):
    http://corpus.quran.com/

  21. Dr Bilal says:

salaam alaykum brother. Please watch your language. It is your right to disagree with me, and it is my right to hold my opinion. If you want to discuss an issue, do so with proper Islamic etiquette. Such course language is not befitting of a Muslim who the Prophet (pbuh) instructed to be silent, if he or she had nothing good to say. If your language is any indication of your upbringing in non-Muslim schools, then it speaks volumes by itself. Our children have a right to be educated in an Islamic environment, to do otherwise is to endanger their spiritual future.

  22. Dr Bilal says:

It is unfortunate that your vulgar pessimism clouds your vision to the degree that you reject the Islamization of education which the Ummah is finally awakening to after years of colonial domination, liberalism, secularism, pseudo-science and so-called “reason”. In shaa Allah, it will be a success and it will fuel a rennaisance in the Muslim world which will bring the Ummah back into the main-stream, able to contribute to human civilization on a scale similar to the way it did in the past.

  23. Assalamu alaikum,Dr.
I love your lecture.I agree all thing you have said.
Inshaallah I will spread your messages in my country.
    May Allah bless u

  26. Amina says:

    Asalamalaykum
I would like to assist you in coordinating this project. I suggest to create working groups by subject and level, such as elementary level science, high school level history, etc and then these working groups can come up with proposals of what an Islamicized curriculum would look like at each level and in each subject – texts to be used (and those to be avoided), a syllabus — inshaAllah it could all come together as a homeschool / Islamic school program that can be either marketed and sold or distributed for free.
I am a revert raised in NYC but Muslim alhamdullila for the past 10+ years. I am in charge of administration and curriculum development at our masjid’s weekend school and am working on my Masters in Education. I went to the best private schools and to Ivy league University — I know what “the best” the non-Muslim world has to offer, but have no plans to send my children to any non-Muslim institutions. The main reason is that there is a pervasive underlying worldview that is also taught, although not overtly, as  I know you understand.
I believe in this project you have proposed and am working on it myself in order to be prepared to homeschool my children. All Muslims should endeavor to educate our children so that they understand the world for what it is — not through the eyes of those who have not been given the Truth, but rather through an Islamicized education program in which the reality of this dunya and the truth of Creation is the underlying shaping factor. We send our children to school to learn how to best navigate this dunya – yet non-Muslim schools teach them how to win dunya often at the cost of loosing Akirah. Sending our children to non-Muslim schools is like giving them directions with no destination. The true Believer remembers the reality of the temporal nature of life and this dunya — if we don’t come up with this Islamicized education system, I agree with you that there cannot be a Renaissance for our Ummah. They may continue for the most part to be lost and overly attracted to all the glitter of this dunya, forgetting it is nothing more than a test. If we cannot prepare our children for this final test — then what sort of education are we giving them.
Please be in touch with me inshaAllah.

  27. Aarthi.sha says:

    Assalamu Alaikum brother!
We are an institution in Chennai where we train sisters to be Islamic Studies Teachers.
As a part of their curriculum we also wish to train them in Islamization of academic subjects as we think that it is very important to teach the future ummah to look at everything from the perspective of islam , Insha Allah.
We would like to know if we could get any help from you in this regard. May Allah reward you for your efforts.

  28. Dr Bilal says:

    wa alaykum salaam
Whatever I can do to help, I will gladly do. How can I help you?

  29. Dr Bilal says:

wa alaykum salaam. I will pass your name on to the team in India which is coordinating the effort currently. jazaakumullaahu khayran for coming forward and offering to participate.

  30. Iqbal says:

    Assalamu Alaikum Dr. Bilal,
I am an IT Engineer by profession and working as a Project Manager for a reputed company in India. Though I am not a teacher perse, I’ve some experience in coaching and training in my company (grown-ups). And I am very much interested in working in the field of schooling, especially the noble cause of “islamization of education”. Have been reading a lot about that, but could not find a way to put my efforts properly. Will there be a chance for me to involve?

  31. Nabila Ansari says:

    assalamu alaykum
Subhan Allah whatever you have said in your lecture is what I have had in my mind for a while now. You have put all that I wanted to say or do in words. Alhamdolillah.
I teach Islamic Studies from home to  expat community. There is only one school  in our community and that is a British School.
In a situation like this one can actually experience all that you have said in your lecture. Unfortunately it does not bother the majority of the parents that their kids are not receiving any Islamic Education. They seem contended that their children are doing  the “nazirah” (reading Quran in Arabic without any understanding).
However their is a small group of parents who worry but due to lack of time, knowledge fail to do anything about it.
I believe for something to happen their has to be a desire. I can see the desire in a few. And I think that is the reason Allah has started to put the ideas of Islamization of Schools in the minds of good people like you.
May Allah put barakah in your in this work of yours.
I do not know how I can help you other than making dua for you.
If you know a way in which I can be of any service  to you, please let me know.
    jazak Allah khayr
    Nabila

Please email brother Dawood Vaid at: dawood@burooj.org.

As an administrator and teacher at a private Islamic elementary school I am very interested in assisting here insha Allah. I am very much wanting to make an islamic education available to those who may not be able to afford a private academy insha Allah. Please let me know how I can help. I have already sent you an email.

  34. Assalaamu alykum
I work as an ESL/EFL Instructor at Taif University, in KSA. I ask Allah (SWT) to reward you for such vivid & critical matter, the best of HIS rewards Insha’Allah.
I strongly believe that most of the ESL/EFL/ESP..etc., course materials used in English as a L2,  conflict with Islamic values and the cultural practices of Muslim learners. Thus, there is an urgent need to propose alternatives to adapt teaching meaningful materials to suit the Muslim learners, need and their cultural backgrounds.
Jazakum Allah (SWT) kirn. Please, let me know how I can be helpful in this blessed project..;-))

    wa alaykum salaam brother Abdullah,
Good to hear from you reinforcing thoughts which indicate the the project is huge, and needs to be started now.
You may email brother Dawood Vaid who is currrently managing the curriculum islamization team in India at dawood@burooj.org and offer your services along with your cv.

  36. Renata says:

  37. Dr Bilal says:

Please send your academic and Islamic cv to my email aabphilips@gmail.com. Please download the promotional materials at this link: http://www.islamiconlineuniversity.com/promo-page.php circulate it with the members of your group and distribute it in mosques, and Islamic institutions as well as on campuses among the Muslim Student Associations, etc.

  38. Irfan says:

Bilal, why did you say studying in a non-muslim school is fundamentally haraam? Where did you get that from?

  39. Irfan says:

I go to a “non-Muslim” school in the United States (UCLA). Yes, subjects are not taught here from an Islamic perspective. Do you see a problem with any of these?

  40. Assalamu alaykum w.w.
Good to hear that there are Muslims who are dedicated to establish a network for Islamic education curriculum because it helps especially to those Islamic schools around the world.
Here in Davao City Philippines, Al Munawwara Islamic School has just started the Islamic Education since 2008 but still we dont have yet the standard Islamic Education in English, Math and Science which are in accordance or related to the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Though we had been planning since 2008 but still we are at lower level because we need expert.
We support your cause. Please continue no matter what others thought of. Let us always remember that whatever good things we do there are always people who try to block instead of supporting.
    Insha-Allah, God will guide them.

  41. Abu Bilal says:

    Brother Dr Bilal,

All the best. Please see your email.

  42. Abu Bilal says:

    Irfan,

    Can you please leave us?
Your comments are not accepted at all.

  43. Dr Bilal says:

Irfan. From your responses, curses, vulgar language and ignorance, it is quite obvious that you go to a non-Muslim school in the US. The problem is what it has done to you. In fact, you are a classical example of why Muslim kids need to go to Muslim Schools to prevent products like yourself. So, no need to respond to your questions, you have answered them with your totally un-Islamic behavior. May Allah guide you and those like you.

  45. Dr Bilal says:

wa alaykum salaam Sister Ummy Luqman,
The books are very cheap. They are being sold for only one pound per book!!! Anyway, I plan to have them up on my website for free reading and downloading soon – in shaa Allaah. Otherwise, there are websites dedicated to Muslim children’s education, hunt them down and benefit from them.
