The Mujaddid vs the Mahdi

An interesting question was raised to me today about knowing who the religious reviver/renewer of the century (the Mujaddid) is or was, as different people have made different claims. First and foremost, the Mujaddid will be a fundamentalist, calling people back to the fundamentals of Islam in their pristine purity, and not an innovator or defender of deviant customs and traditions of a given land. Secondly, unlike the Mahdi, we are not required to know exactly who the Mujaddid is. In the case of the Mahdi, the Prophet (pbuh) gave clear descriptions of his physical features, the name of his father and mother, his tribe, etc. as well as incidents which would accompany his rise to prominance. So, we need to know who he is to be able to follow him in the battle against the forces of evil which will peak with the appearance of the Anti-Christ (Maseeh ad-Dajjaal). On the other hand, the Prophet (pbuh) mentioned in vague terms that at the begining or end of every era/century, Allah would send someone who would revive Islam for the people. This indicates that the religion would virtually die out in different parts of the Muslim world and be brought back to life by individuals chosen by Allah for that job. What this is telling the believers is that true Islam will always prevail, it will never be erased and lost. Because its final form was the last, it had to be preserved as a means of salvation for humankind until the Last Day of this world. The Islam brought by Prophet Jesus (pbuh) was virtually lost within 400-700 years of his departure. 1,400 years have passed since Muhammad’s death and the pure message remains preserved by Muslim scholars and the masses to varying degrees around the Muslim world. So, it is not a problem if scholars differed as to who the Mujaddid of the last century or the one before it was. Some said it was one person, and some said another. As long as the person chosen was not a innovator or a defender of innovation, he could have been the one and it is not important to know who he was. Thirdly, no one can legitimately be declared to be the Mujaddid while he is still alive or before the end of the century/era, as that would imply knowledge of the future, which is known only to Allah.

    Salam Brother Bilal,

It is nice to hear from you after a while. I assume you have been busy, inshallah you are in good health.

I am currently undergoing one of your course in the islamic online universty called Fiqh of Taharah. I have got up to module 10 and have completed the section about wudu.

I noticed that in the description of wudu you mentioned many of the essential components of wudu and provided authentic evidences along with them. But I didn’t find any mention of washing in between the fingers and toes. So my question is that is this practice based on weak hadiths?

    Jazak brother
    Salamalaykum

  7. stay away from najd says:

Did Abdulwahhab revive the sunnah or is he the devil from najd who (tried to)destroyed islam from within

  8. Dr Bilal says:

Without a shadow of a doubt, Muhammad ibn Abdil-Wahhaab was a reviver of the Sunnah and authentic Islam. His writings speak for themselves. Were he a “devil” from Najd, it would have been evident in his writings. So those who claim his deviation should be asked to bring evidence from his writings and not “heresay” falsely attributed to him. Of course, authentic Islam, appeared as “deviation” at that time, when custom and tradition had overshadowed it. So, keep that in mind as you look at the arguments from both sides.

  9. Dr Bilal says:

    wa alaykum salaam.
As a point of clarification, the course on Wudoo is given by Sh Abdur Raouf Shakir, a Madeenah University graduate from the College of Hadeeth, and not me. However, washing between the toes is confirmed in authentic narrations. For example:
Ibn Abbas narrated that Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) said: “Wash between your fingers and toes whenever you make wudoo.” (Sunan at-Tirmithee, no. 39)

    Salam,

Thankyou brother bilal for your awnser. I have benefited from your course of taharah and I ask Allah to make that knowledge a source of benefit for me and to also give you multiple hasan for sharing with us. ameen.

I ask Allah to give you the best in this life and in the akhira and to save us all from the punishment ameen. Your a good example for muslims who are serious about spreading the deen.
May Allah give us all the best of his ramadan too. Ameen.

salaam alaykum Brother Abdul Kadir. Please repeat your question, as I do recall it.

  16. Rabia Hohmann says:

    Salaam alaykum Dr. Bilal,
What is the ruling on menstruating women being inside of the masjid’s prayer area? I have found proof of my opinion, based that those prohibitions were from weak hadith (i.e as referenced in the Fiqh of Tahaarah course by Shaykh Abdur-Ra’uf Shakir):
“It was narrated that Jasrah said: Umm Salamah (may Allaah be pleased with her) told me: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the courtyard of this mosque and called out at the top of his voice, “The mosque is nor permissible for anyone who is sexually impure or any woman who is menstruating.” [Sunan Ibn Maajah, Volume 1, Hadeeth Number 645, p. 428 – 429; Classed as Da‟eef by Haafiz Aboo Taahir Zubayr ‘Alee Za’i]
It was reported from Aflat ibn Khaleefah who said: Jasrah bint Dijaajah narrated to me, she said: I heard ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) saying: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) once came and saw that the doors of his Companions houses were exciting into the Masjid. He said, “Turn these (doors of) the houses away from the Masjid.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered (one of his houses), but the people did not do anything, hoping that a concession might be revealed for them. He (peace be upon him) said, “Turn these (doors of the) houses away from the Masjid, for I do not permit the Masjid for a menstruating woman or sexually impure person.” [Sunan Aboo Daawood, Volume 1, Book 1, Hadeeth Number 232, p. 149 – 150]
Sheikh Al-Albaane said: “Citing these narrations in this manner gives the reader the impression that they are two hadeeths with two distinct Isnaads (chains), one from „Aa‟ishah and one from Umm Salamah. This is not the case, because they are one hadeeth with one Isnaad reported via Jasrah bint Dijaajah who was inconsistent in its narration and said once, “From „Aa‟ishah”, and another time, “From Umm Salamah”. Inconsistency is a cause of weakness for a Hadeeth, as is well – known among the scholars of Hadeeth, because it is an indication of the narrator‟s inaccuracy and faultiness. Additionally, this narrator Jasrah was not approved by anyone whose approval is reliable. Rather, al – Bukhaari said, “She has puzzling narrations.” Because of this, a group (of scholars) have considered this hadeeth weak, as indicated by al – Khattaabee. Also, al – Bayhaqee said, “This is not a reliable hadeeth.” „Abdul – Haaq said, “It cannot be approved.” And Ibn Hazm, though a little excessive, said, “It is baseless.” [Translated from Tamaam ul – Minnah fit – Ta‟leeqi „alaa Fiqh is – Sunnah, p. 118, as quoted in ‘Worship During Menses‟, p. 51, by Dr. Muhammad al – Jibaaly, al – Kitaab & as – Sunnah Publishing, 2001] – Ed. 9 Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 1, Book”
However, a sister has brought me be following hadith and fatwa from IslamQA, and I don’t know the hadith’s authenticity.
“It is haraam for a menstruating woman to stay in the mosque and even for the Eid prayer area based on the hadith of Umm ‘Atiyya (may Allaah be pleased with her) who hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him say): ‘Let the girls who have obtained puberty, women in seclusion , and mensturating women go out (i.e. to the Eid prayer). But in this hadeeth it says: ‘But let the menstruating women avoid the prayer place.’” -Agreed Upon ”
Does the agreed upon mean that is sahih? There isn’t any reference to the authenticity of the hadith. I’m sorry for the long question, and I know you have a book discussing the subject. However, I am unable to purchase the book at this time. Please respond as soon as you are able.

why do u not blog with harun yahya about the  name of the mahdi is it a hidden name or a secret name known by the person who holds the title, and is his name Mohammed according to the sharia of our beloved prophet.

  20. yousuf says:

    ‎A Mujaddid (Arabic: مجدد‎), according to the popular Muslim tradition, refers to a person who appears at turn of every century of the Islamic calendar to revive Islam, remove from it any extraneous elements and restore it to its pristine purity. A mujaddid might be a caliph, a saint (wali), a prominent teacher, a scholar or some other kind of influential person. ‎The concept is based on the following Prophetic tradition (hadith): Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet Muhammad RASOOL ALLAH SALLALLAHU ALAIHI WASALLAM said;

“Allah shall raise for this Ummah at the head of every century a man who shall renew (or revive) for it its religion.”

—Sunan Abu Dawood, Book 37: Kitab al-Malahim [Battles], Hâdith Number 4278.[1]
